Red Bull likes to refer to well known facts and myths in their commercials. This time Red Bull based a commercial on a famous story from the Bible. In the commercial three men are in a boat. One of them, apparently Jesus, suggests that since they will not catch any fish today he will go home. He then proceeds to exit the boat and walk over the water. One of his companions tells him to stop and asks how he is able to walk on water. The other companion guesses that he drank Red Bull since Red Bull gives you wings. Jesus then explains that it has nothing to do with Red Bull, or a miracle for that matter. You just have to know where the rocks are. Jesus then almost slips and proclaims “Jesus!”.

The Advertising Code Commission received a complaint based on this commercial. The commercial would be in contravention to good taste and morals and would needlessly hurt people. The ACC did not agree with this. It is clear that this commercial was specifically aimed at one product and was meant to be humoristic. The fact that not everyone could appreciate the commercial was no reason to assume it was in contravention with good taste. Internationally the commercial garnered a lot of attention, though. In South Africa the Cardinal asked people not to drink Red Bull during the 40 day fast. The Islamic Counsil proclaimed its solidarity with Christians. Reason enough for Red Bull to terminate the commercial.

About Abcor

Abcor specializes in applying for trademark and design rights. We do this worldwide for both SMEs and international companies, but often everything starts with an initial Benelux application. Our aim is to relieve the client of all the worries, which is why we take care of all the steps, from initial advice on what to apply for and how, right through to registration.

In addition to applying for trademarks, we also manage portfolios for our clients. We ensure that trademarks are renewed on time, that the right organizations are paid (given the many fraudulent companies), and we support our clients on issues.

In addition, we are sparring partners for our customers on new products and how to shape and claim new ideas.
